Small Business Innovation Research Program

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program facilitates commercialization of innovations resulting from federal awards. Legislation requires all federal agencies with $100 million+ a year in research budgets to set aside 2.5 percent of those funds for SBIR awards to qualified companies. Stennis Space Center has had a variety of SBIR awards since 1986.

Companies eligible to participate in the SBIR Program must:

  • Be able to perform the majority of the research effort
  • Not be prominent in a field of expertise to be a sole source investigator
  • Women and minority-owned small businesses are strongly encouraged to apply.

SBIR is a three-phase program.

  • Phase I: Six month feasibility study and $100,000 maximum award
  • Phase II: Twenty-four (24) month prototype development and $600,000 maximum award
  • Phase III: Commercialize technology developed in Phase II
