New Technology Protects Surfaces From Rocket Plume

SSC invented a technology to deflect the exhaust plume of rockets and extend the lifetime of the underlying surfaces.  SSC propulsion test facilities use large volumes of water or ablative materials to protect the surfaces exposed to rocket exhaust.  Water cooling requires copious amounts of nozzles, piping, drainage systems and maintenance.  Ablative materials have short lifetimes and require frequent patching or reapplication.  The new plume deflection technology has the potential to reduce the thermal stress on surfaces, and therefore, reduce the cost associated with testing rockets.
